Chris undertook this fantastic project whilst working as an Associate at Wilkinson Eyre Architects. Chris was responsible for managing the design team from concept design stages right through to its successful completion on site. Chris undertook an intensive on site role as Site Architect on behalf of the main Contractor – Sir Robert McAlpine.
The building comprises a uniquely designed, series of new build learning and teaching spaces integrated between a series of distinctive existing buildings located at the heart of Exeter University’s Streatham Campus. The project included the construction of a new state-of-the art 400 seat auditorium, several retail units including a bank, an open plan double height student services centre, a refurbished s storey library and a suite of new seminar rooms. A sinuously formed free spanning, copper clad timber glu-lam grid shell roof structure encloses the new spaces below and provides a continuous visual connection between the numerous abutting existing buildings.
The building was formerly opening by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth in May 2012. The project was designed and constructed to achieve a Breeam Rating of Excellent and has received several regional and nation wide design award nominations including a shortlisting for RIBA Building of the Year 2013.
